Disney should create NEW characters of color rather than recasting them as such in live actions. It just feels lazy. I enjoyed the Little Mermaid but wouldve loved to see effort put into a new character & storyline

She’s a mermaid, she was not real. Her look is not what mattered it was her voice. As long as a pretty girl walked out the ocean prince eric did not care.

i agree. She’s a fish. It would be nice to see new characters & movies though. Disney is boring now. I think they’re working on a live action Tangled too. That’s cool but it just gets repetitive

Nobody’s saying she’s real. But look at Mulan for example, just the general story is unique and includes parts of another culture. When you just cast someone of color to fill the shoes, there typically isn’t a change in story. But a new story lets you learn new things. Like Aladdin. It means a little more and shows more when you do those things.

Mulan is a poor example because she was real, so no casting a non Chinese Asian to play her would’ve been inappropriate. Casting let’s say for example a Japanese actress to play her would’ve been a slap in the face.

Yes, but there are other real princesses in other cultures that haven’t been explored. Or just new cultures in general that could be explored. Does Ariel’s skin tone affect her story arc? No. But it’d be more interesting if a backstory and culture supported it. Like Moana.
