can y’all PLEASE learn how to read and interpret info correctly. if an RD says “hey it’s ok to include treats in a balanced diet” why does 75% of the comment section assume he’s advocating for high sugar diets 😭 a cookie on occasion won’t kill you

Schools need to do a much better job of teaching people how to deduce exactly what a sentence is and isn't saying. It would save so many people from falling for scams and misinformation

it’s not all a lack of effort on the teachers’ part tbh. the addition of ipads/chromebooks has made their job a lot harder. it’s difficult to monitor all of the tabs 30+ kids have open and some of them are really good at hiding stuff. many modern “parents” also don’t bother to teach anything to their kids at home, including respect for authority lmao

I mean everything you're saying is true but I'm not sure that I remember this topic even being mentioned when I was in school. Education in the US is so focused on the same basic subjects each year, with each class feeling like a preparation for the next class rather than an actual expansion of our the students' knowledge of the world. It leads to us having to teach ourselves lot of crucial life skills as adults. You can argue parents should teach that stuff but the reality is they aren't either

I quite literally said parents aren’t teaching anything at home lol. Context clues and a certain level of nuance were absolutely covered in my education and I come from a poor southern state. I do agree that we should be pushing for better education all around though. We should be encouraging kids to read for entertainment rather than shoving tablets at them

I did learn about context clues but I don't think most kids are learning logic and deduction. We should all be able to read an article/ad/study and pick out exactly which information the writer is definitely stating to be true, and yet most adults can't

Also I wasn't trying to say that you weren't addressing the fact that parents don't teach that stuff either, I just ran out of characters. I meant that if parents aren't teaching something important and the schools are capable of teaching it, then I think they should. Our education system should be aimed at making our youth as prepared for success as possible rather than shifting that responsibility elsewhere

I also think social media and ai have influenced a major decline in critical thinking lately (almost demonizing it even) so I'm totally not trying to shut down that side of the conversation

HEAVY on social media and AI having a negative impact 😩 Most kids’ day-to-day communication is full of grammatical and spelling errors and poor sentence structure. There are studies suggesting repeated use of AI may cause your brain to slowly lose some functions, but kids are using it casually for a wide variety of tasks. There are adults doing the same. I feel like the COVID lockdown was a catalyst for this increased integration of technology and the rapid decline in literacy

Short form content and instant gratification have whittled their patience and attention span down to the point that anything longer than 2-3 sentences results in them saying “I ain’t reading allat”
