Same when I walk around my neighborhood, or on hiking trails. Literally takes a few seconds to acknowledge each other, not some big ask

Exactly. My rule is to be as friendly as possible. If people wanna call me fake that’s fine. If people think it makes me awkward that’s fine: but Ill never be mean so 😪
