I meant them painting their skin black just to dress up as sheep when it’s completely unnecessary

Why? Looks like a sheep. So they’re sheep. You can clearly tell they’re dressed as sheep. Look at these little fellas and tell me they’re not identical

You don’t need to paint you skin black, you can use black clothing. Just wearing black clothes as part of the costume will still make it look like you’re dressed as sheep.

Not the face. Plus that’s hot as hell. One of them went with long sleeves tho, and they’re all wearing stockings. Their costume is fun, looks good, and they’re comfortable. The stick up your ass making you act all holier than thou and misrepresenting a valid argument must not be comfortable though

You can find long sleeved shirts that are thin enough to not make you hot, or made to not make you overheat. They could also cut stockings and put it over their arms. How do I have a stick up my ass for pointing out how unnecessary painting your face black is? Painting your face black won't make you look exactly like a sheep-

No, but painting your face black for a fun animal costume isn’t wrong either

It’s blackface

No, it’s not. Blackface is painting yourself brown or black in order to make fun of and dehumanize black people or black characters, using harmful stereotypes and caricatures of their features. This is a group of friends dressed like a sheep.

Blackface isn’t just about the intent though, it’s about the appearance as well. They’re painting their skin that imitates dark skin. Even though they still have a whole costume dressed as sheep, the paint is on their actual skin which looks like the makeup used in minstrel shows. A costume doesn’t change the fact that they painted their skin to look darker.

They’re not imitating dark skin. They’re dressed up as a sheep. If you genuinely cannot fathom that difference, and actual harm of real black face, I urge you to do more research before virtue signaling on YikYak

It doesn’t matter if they’re purposefully imitating dark skin, their skin is darkened by black paint/makeup which looks like what people used to do for minstrel shows. It doesn’t matter whether or not they have a costume, their skin is still painted black. Notice how it’s mostly white people doing shit like this and then saying stuff like “block me if you don’t like it” when they’re called out?

These are people dressed as sheep. Do you find sheep mocking to black people? Do you find sheep to be imitative of black people and their skin? If so you have lots of work to get through. Does a charcoal face mask make you feel the same way? Eyeblack on sports players or soldiers? Navy seal face paint camouflage? Or are you just looking for ways to be upset at people for having fun bc they happen to be white? Would you be upset at a Latina dressed this way? Or a Korean woman? Or a mixed woman?

Blackface is connected to a long history of racist caricatures, one of the most obvious ones being the color of their skin.

Exactly, but never just their skin. It’s used to harm, hurt, dehumanize, and make fun of many features, and them as people. These women dressing as sheep doesn’t do any of that. It doesn’t make fun of any characteristics associated with black people. It’s a sheep. They painted the parts of them black to match the black face and leg fur on a sheep. If you can’t separate that from black face, YOU need to do more self reflection and research

There’s a difference between painting your face and limbs black than putting on eyeblack or charcoal mask. Also sheep are animals that can’t control the color they are?? I would absolutely be upset at anyone who isn’t black dressed like this, but notice how most of the people dressing like this are white.

No, the people you focus on are white. Exposure bias and confirmation bias. People don’t care because it doesn’t cause a fight like it does here. It’s media engagement bait and you fell for it

Even if it’s not their intent to dehumanize or mock black people, the act of painting your face black is tired to the history of blackface no matter what you are trying to do.

It’s not just painting your face black. It never was. That is a HUGE simplification and a misinformed concept of the massive history of the harm of blackface. There’s real harm being done everyday to black people in this country and everywhere around the globe. Women dressing as sheep isn’t one of them

You’re right, it’s not JUST painting your face black, but painting your face black is a part of it. The act of painting your face black was and still is connected to it. Part of the harm comes from using appearance that has historically been used to mock, stereotype, and dehumanize Black people. Doing shit like this can make it become normalize to paint your face black for different characters as a costume.

I did read the other comments, which is why I made my comment in the first place. It just wouldn’t let me reply to your comment with a picture!!!! I agreed that this was unnecessary and they could’ve very easily done the costume without painting their face, but it’s not black face… that would be like saying putting a charcoal face mask on your face is black face because it’s black and it’s on your face

No matter how objectively correct you are here, they’ve based their entire argument around their belief structure makes them morally superior, even though it’s illogical, and thus admission they’re wrong would unravel their sense of morality. So they can’t, and won’t. Good luck though fam

Right, and that history is exactly why people call it out and say it’s wrong. When you paint your face black for any costume, even if it is not meant to imitate a Black person, it still resembles the same act that was used in minstrel shows. That is why people see it as crossing a line. It is tied to something with a long record of mocking and dehumanizing Black people.

Damn diva, I think we need to have a deep dive into American history and let’s see one time where painting your face black was necessary. Certainly, there’s a plethora of other ways to make something look cute. And as the Black woman you are, I’m disgusted you’re excusing the same people who would shit on you if the opportunity arose.

Do they make wool balls that are as cheap as cotton balls😭😭😭 and also there’s pictures of people doing the costume without the face coloring while still using cotton balls so are you going to call them racist too because of the cotton balls… because the problem that you have is with the face paint, but if it’s also with the cotton balls then anyone who uses cotton balls for a costume could be considered racist

Also, let’s take a moment to realize that definitions often have nuances and the social understanding of black face has evolved over time. Whether or not someone claims they aren’t trying to look like a Black person, painting your face black in a performance or costume still taps into a history of racial stereotyping, which is why it’s harmful and considered blackface in practice.

Note how there has been real work to fight against racism and systemic oppression, but it still hasn’t gone away. It takes a lot of time and effort so, you’re basically ignoring everything that has already been achieved. Mind you the last desegregated school was in 2016.
