I have friends as well as my brother and dad who say therapy is for women and will pretty much die on that hill and I’ve never understood why. Like go ahead and make fun of me all you want but I’m getting the mental help and relief I need

I’m a leftist but kinda required to use AI since I’m in computer science. Fully support it being regulated or even stopping the progress of AI but it’s literally a requirement to use in STEM fields or you are at a disadvantage which in capitalism means you lose everything basically

I have a nuanced take on therapy. We're over therpaized as a society. And our mental health is being manipulated by our food and water supply basically being pharmaceuticals and our media bombarding us with negativity and false depictions of what life is. No problem with it existing or even going. But traditionally therapy had an end date. These days it's treated as a subscription service.

On the AI water arguments, you guys realize that the water isn’t WASTED right? Same thing with chip fabs they take nuts amounts of water but recycle 90% of it such that it becomes relatively small usage. The numbers they use to shoot at how bad AI facilities are is are mostly from max flow rates and disregards recycling. No waste products are being introduced into the water unless you wanna consider heat going into the pipes and some metals getting dissolved in.

the amount of energy and water its using, and co2 its immiting is destroying the environment at a rapid rate. they put the server centers in small rural areas & older folks are developing COPD alarmingly all while being asked to use less power in their homes. its horrifying and dystopian.

With taking all of this into account do you know how much water an energy it takes to make the phone YOU are using right now, let along the energy and the co2 being produced by the same car YOU drive and choose to use on a Daily basis even before ai was as popular as it is today, not to mention the WiFi or cellular data needed to use the phone your responding on

Yes all of this costs energy and water, but these server centers use A LOT more much more rapidly. A lot of people living near these server centers don't even have any water in their homes because of just how much water these centers suck up.

yeah, the amount of energy i use altogether is like a fraction of a breath compared to an ai data center. we will not grow old or have clean, affordable drinking water later in life. you are being wilfully ignorant to the information that is at your fingertips because you "like" AI, you can just say that.

Do you have a source of that information? I’d love to take a look, but the point I’m trying to make isn’t that both done cause harm, it’s the fact your singling out the harm from ai usage whe the damage already done by cars, phones, and other technologies have already been causing this harm, and no body really cares until ai came into the picture. And ppl still all over even my own town, they’re houses are getting sold without there consent to make way to production lines or grocery stores,

Have a friend that has become so enveloped with ChatGPT they use it to justify all their increasingly bad behaviors, and with every person they match with on tinder, and to pick what to eat, where to go on a hike, where to buy property, what to invest in (we lost money last year I’m not listening to his ass anymore).

It’s just stupid to pretend it’s necessary when it’s really not. People have been doing STEM things for years and years without AI and it’s never been a problem until now because people now think they need it/are too lazy to do the work themselves.

No you’re just significantly less efficient than people who are using AI depending on the task. I don’t know everything yet as a new grad but the way it is with AI I’m better off filling in the blanks with AI so I can get deliverables done faster. If I don’t then I’m the only one not increasing my speed while everyone else is and I’ll be left behind

Anonymous replying to -> #7 2h

oh yeah all the benefits like how illiteracy rates are skyrocketing because “the computer can just read and write for me”. Also you saying “it’s all fine” is so untrue, even phones pollute! But AI is polluting and using water at an even greater, unprecedented rate. Phones and nuclear power are not even comparable to AI data centers. Obviously we need to address all things contributing to pollution and climate change but acting like AI isn’t an extremely significant factor in that is insane.

also I’d like to point out that not everybody “throws out” their phones when a new one comes out like you said. I had an iphone 6 for nine years before I had to upgrade due to software issues. Obviously the trash is bad and nobody is saying it isn’t! The fact is though that we can admit both AI and trash pollution are bad and you can’t.

I didn’t and still haven’t disagreed that ai causes pollution 😭 please point out to me where I said that, th point I’m trying to push is in the grand scheme of things it’s just not that big of a deal

But it IS a big deal!!! That’s the part you’re not getting. How is unprecedented rates of water usage not a big deal? And according to your argument, shouldn’t any amount of pollution be a big deal? Since you keep getting upset that we’re not talking about every single other issue as well? It’s all a big deal jfc it’s like talking to a brick wall 😭

please do a tiny bit of research I’m begging you. AI accounts for much less than 1% of our power consumption and freshwater usage. computation is one of the only parts of our current society that is sustainable. the way we eat and commute need to be radically restructured if we want our species to survive, the way we compute does not. when you push the “but muh AI water” bullshit you are distracting from actual environmental issues, and big oil is grateful for your doing so
