When jazz became americas popular music, some musicians broke away from the mainstream. Ornette coleman, a pioneer of the free jazz movement is one example, his music was abrasive, chaotic, and went against the established norms of popular jazz music to focus on improvisation and selfexpression. Punk music may be seen the same way, characterized by self-expression and abrasiveness, which the aesthetic and subculture also embody
Im aware the story of punk is distinctly not linear - there is no queen/king of punk like there is for rocknroll - i know there was protopunk, before punk’s mainstream breakout, with patti, tvu, the stooges, etc in the 60s, but theyr so spread over the country meaning punk was a convergent phenomenon. This isnt like how most genres originate, like grunge’s localization in seattle or trip hop in bristol. I guess my question is what’s the story of punk, and how/why did punk converge in the 70s
