bc intelligence is important. not caring is a lack of discipline which is an important life skill. you should care about critical thinking and problem solving skills which are applicable to many school subjects

Anonymous replying to -> #13 16h

highkey more embarrassing that you’re determining someone’s worth through a number that could be derived from ANY system. some schools are shitty, and a lot of people have learning disabilities that aren’t addressed. also, people can struggle in high school & graduate top of their class in college depending on major.

i’m not just talking abt memorizing words on a paper, school teaches skills used in day to day life and people should realize it’s important. however i don’t think anyone’s worth is actually determined by gpa

i wasn’t trying to directly shame you, i was mostly joking. however thinking education isn’t important or that serious is a dangerous mindset and is part of the reason why the literacy rates in this country are treacherous

upvote 3 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #13 15h

Dude I don’t think education is unimportant im the most curious and knowledgeable hungry person you’ll meet, but school is mostly useless especially high school, and gpa doesn’t matter and isn’t a measure of anything. Teach yourself things don’t rely on some dumb system to “educate” you

treacherous is an odd word choice here, can you clarify what you mean by that?

upvote 6 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #3 15h

i agree that you should always be hungry to learn, but a lot of things you learn in high school teach you underlying skills that you can apply daily such as problem solving and critical thinking

i mean that the average adult shouldn’t be reading at a 7th grade level

upvote 2 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #13 15h

also i assume by "this country" you mean the US. off the top of your head (don't look it up), roughly what percent of individuals aged 15+ do you think are literate in the US?

upvote 6 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #24 15h

yes i mean the US, id estimate around 70% are literate

upvote 2 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #13 15h

by literate do you mean like. capable of reading and writing, or is your definitio relating more to complex problem solving and inference from text?

upvote 6 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #13 15h

(sorry, i guess a simpler way to say that is, do you mean basic literacy or functional literacy)

upvote 9 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #24 15h

i think that the majority are literate in the simplest form or reading and writing, but i also think that the majority of those who are literate are not proficient and lack problem solving skills and inference like you said due to having a lower level of literacy

upvote 5 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #13 15h

you'd be right that the majority are literate in the simplest form, though if 70% was your estimate you'll be glad to learn that roughly 99% of adults 15+ in the US have basic literacy (often defined by the ability to write or read a simple sentence) though around 20% of those are considered "functionally illiterate" as in, are unable to read and understand complex instructions and subtext

upvote 15 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #13 15h

i'd also argue that for many of those people are likely suffering from circumstances- such as poverty, and the consequences associated with that (food/housing insecurity, drug use, parents or siblings in prison, parentification, lack of secondary educational resources, chronic stress impacting attention, etc.) and individuals with low GPAs are not the cause of this literacy crisis, even if they may be a symptom. the causes are systemic, by and large

i think the rise of social media has also been a big factor, and relatedly the disruption to education caused by the pandemic. the education system needs to adapt but it's difficult to figure out how to do that on a wide scale

upvote 14 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #13 15h

but i'm curious if you believe that its more the result of some sociological shift in how much we prioritize education, and if so, what you think caused that shift?

upvote 15 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #24 15h

i completely agree with you on every statement, the systematical effects are strong and social media definitely plays a part as well. these are all exact thoughts i’ve had myself. and i don’t believe people should be shamed for struggling but should have wide access to help and resources

upvote 7 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #24 15h

i somewhat do believe that the pandemic caused a physical and sociological shift as well (alongside with the widespread of ai). with the access of learning online, it became significantly easier to cheat and not apply yourself or learn and i believe that also can play a factor in teenagers/young adults downplaying the importance of education

Exactly. Futhermore, in my freshman and sophomore year I lived in an extremely abusive home environment. I got a 1.9 freshman and a 0.9 sophomore. I left that home. My junior year of HS I got a 3.1 and my senior year a 3.5 while still healing from that environment. I can’t judge most people for how they did in high-school considering many children live in environments that harm their education while having no control. Now as an adult I am able to succeed.
