Nah. If you think that your concept of humanity is based on time period, then you’re just a horrible person. That’s like saying ‘Well, I probably would’ve been a Nazi if I lived in Nazi Germany’. No fam, there were people that knew it was wrong back then, just like there are people that know the genocide in Gaza is wrong right know. Just like how there were abolitionists since the day America was founded.
So YOU believe that if YOU were born as a white man in the 1850s south you’d be perfectly unbiased towards blacks and would never dream of owning a slave? You’d be one of the few exceptions amongst millions of people conditioned to believe what they did? You are ridiculously ignorant if you do.
If you lived in the time period, you most likely did in fact believe it was fine to own slaves. This is independent of the fact that it’s not acceptable to exploit humans (Gods creation) in such a manner. The reason very few would believe it was unacceptable lies in not in human selfishness and our desire to do less work but rather in the reality that people walk around ignorantly without critically thinking for the entirety of their life…
If I was born as a white man in the 1850s, I’d be statistically more likely to be poor and work till death. A good portion of whites in America didn’t even own slaves. But if I happened to be a rich white man, no, I don’t think I would. Peep my example earlier. There’s a genocide going on in Gaza right now. People are conditioned to accept it because Israel ‘has their promised land’. In 100 years, people will look back and wonder how the world didn’t unanimously condemn it.
