Horcruxes kind of need to be things that lend themselves to sentimental value so you can use them to possess people and engineer your return. Otherwise you wind up as the world’s only sentient pair of underwear buried at the bottom of a landfill. Forever.

I think the tombstone idea is good, but he didn’t make any more horcruxes after the incident with baby Harry. If I remember correctly the creator doesn’t become the object after death, they become a black cloaked figure.

I don’t think that’s confirmed how they work; Voldemort’s fatal flaw was his ego. Theoretically you could make anything a Horcrux. That said, I’ve always thought that there powerful/durable an object is, the harder it is to destroy and thus a grain of sand or piece of underwear could be destroyed with virtually no effort

I’m fairly certain it was actually stated in the book that Voldemort was indeed too egotistical to make mere, everyday objects his horcruxes. Those would be for ordinary wizards, not for THE DARK LORD

It’s not made explicit, but we SEE it work that way with the diary and the locket. Ginny didn’t “pour so much of her soul into” a grain of sand headed into deep space. She did it with the diary that could talk back & pretend to give a hoot. Like with the locket. It started to get in Ron’s brain (even though he KNEW it was evil) because he carried it around with him for so long

The ability of a horcrux to manipulate the people carrying them into becoming obsessive (coincidentally protective) does not mean those same emotions are required to create them. I think the point of making them important objects was to protect them as few knew Voldemort had a horcrux. The diary of an infamous serial killer would be put into a museum and given regular attention and upkeep. The locket, diadem, and cup were of similar fame, belonging to the founders of Hogwarts.

That was Quirrel (Voldy was inhabiting him). Until you can do that, you become “less than the meanest ghost, moment by moment forcing [your]self to exist”. So effectively ur nothing until you can possess someone and/or reconstruct a new body. But ur horcrux can help you do that & may be necessary (nagini was always near Voldy when he came back in 4, and the diary was obviously crucial for the method used in 2). Jurys out on how he made first contact with Quirrel but Nagini seems a likely suspect

Oh yeah, and actually hermione does make it explicit when she’s reading up. When Ron asks how possession works, she says you have to be close to the object, but emotionally close to it. Just having it physically present won’t be enough. Dumbledore DOES say Voldy’s ego wouldn’t let him make horcruxes out of garbage (implying it’s possible), but there seem to be more practical reasons it’s not a good idea

I just imagine Nagini with her mouth open and Voldemort’s voice spilling out. Like that one scene from Lilo and Stitch.
