How the actual fuck did people managed to turn a World Cup final between Argentina and Spain into a fight about Israel and Palestine? And apparently, the fact that Spain is historically one of the most violent and prolific colonizers is…forgiven?

I saw a post calling Messi a genocider because there was the pic of him at kotel. Little did they know the pic was from 2016 when he went for a world fundraiser for children with cancer. He also visited Palestinian children during his trip. The ignorance and hate peddled by these bozos makes me crazy.

It has to do with political leanings of both countries. Argentina has a very pro-Israel government, and many Israeli government figures have come out in support of Argentina’s football team. Spain has a more pro-Palestine government so it’s sort of a metaphor/symbolic battle. If we’re being real, both Spain and Argentina have very violent colonial histories and plenty of blood on their hands.

Probably because many South American countries are coming to their senses and rejecting jihadist islamism, and supporting Jews. And Spain is being nostalgic to the Middle Ages/ pre 1490’s

I’m not downplaying antisemitism. If you spend more than 15 seconds on Twitter, you’ll find it to be chock full of this sort of racist bullshit. Reddit is barely any better. This isn’t news to either of us, and I bet you, like me, are tired of it. I’m not denying that it exists. I’m just explaining the whole Spain as Palestine vs Argentina as Israel thing.
