I feel really dumb asking this. Please be nice. I genuinely don’t understand. Why is it a good thing that Greta got in trouble for trying to personally bring aid? I understand her plan was kinda stupid as there are other avenues to give aid, but

I also don’t get why such an extreme reaction was needed. Why not just send people with her to make sure the aid gets delivered? Then tell her she needs proper licensing, documentation, communication with the right people and all that to keep doing the trips and then watching her and her crew leave.

she was told not to go for a multitude of reasons, and was warned that if she did enter there she would be deported. she also made it very performative and said she got kidnapped, but footage released shows her smiling as she’s being handed water and sandwiches.

There’s a blockade for a reason, and it’s probably good that they don’t let random celebrities run a blockade into an active war zone even if their intentions are good. And it’s probably worse PR to let her and the others in and have her kidnapped for ransom or killed (for which the international media would blame the IDF no matter what) than it is to just deport them.

I just care that she claimed she was “kidnapped” and hasn’t acknowledged the hostages currently held by Hamas who were actually kidnapped (that I know of) even though she was literally just detained for breaking the law and then deported, not kidnapped

I think not allowing random civilians to deliver trivial quantities of aid to an active war zone, all for the sake of a publicity stunt, is a good thing, especially when aid workers are regularly being attacked by Hamas in recent months.

I agree. But 1. Greta isn’t really random. She’s known for this stuff. 2. It was less than a truck of aid, they could’ve gone through it easily. 3. That’s why I believe she was delivering aid in the first place. If Hamas killed her, it would’ve looked really bad for them on the world stage. But now Israel looks like the bad guy.

Yeah, letting her get killed for the sake of PR doesn’t exactly strike me as moral

Also it’s entirely performative to garner attention with little actual impact even if it had been successful. Consider how much waste it was to put all of these people on a boat and how much food they took up since they boarded the boat. And it’s not like they were helping sail it probably. If they really cared, they would’ve put a minimal number of people on the boat rather than putting famous people for attention

It’s because she was taken in while in international waters, which Israel doesn’t technically have jurisdiction over

It wasn’t an extreme response, an extreme response would have been sinking the boat without any warning.

It doesn’t matter, there was a blockade, other nations gave them warnings or warnings of sorts

I mean, it does matter, Israel doesn’t have jurisdiction to do that blockade. Yes, it was obvious that this was the best case scenario of what would happen, but this wasn’t people entering a country’s territory and being taken by customs, this was people being taken off international waters. Stuff like this is why international law intended to stop things like the horrors of the world wars has been failing, and any country with the US, China, or Russia backing them can get away with anything

She was still taken from international waters that Israel had no jurisdiction over, there are laws that dictate how these things can be handled and Israel isn’t following them, but because they have the US backing them and the US can veto any enforcement they can get away with anything just like the US

They indeed do have jurisdiction, they’re at war

Being at war does not give a country jurisdiction over international waters, no

the location of the flotilla of when it was intercepted is largely debated, with some reports stating it was in israeli waters, and others saying not. greta said it was not, but i doubt she knew her exact location unless they had equipment on board that would give them a precise location and an expert who could tell them whether they were still in international waters or not.

Greta is not reputable in any way, she was doing a performative stunt, putting her life at risk, least she can do is say thank you for being saved from her own choices
