I don’t know, man…I guess I just feel that if someone’s not comfortable being referred to by those monikers then it’s not my place to shame them out of how they feel. It’s important to me that I ensure folks feel respected and seen for who they are around me, and I really think that respecting this is an important piece of that.
I call people kids a lot. Like, "that kid" "oh a kid" etc. (anyone under 35 is a potential kid. Not a child! Specifically a kid). But sometimes I do know the gender of the person I'm talking about! And somehow, whenever said kid in question is a girl, people are surprised! It does not matter what I'm saying they're doing. Somehow even "kid" is masculine for many people. It's very interesting, and I hope I can continue to make people think about it!
