One way I relate it to cis people is making a mistake is ok once- consider learning someone you thought was named “Dan” is actually “Dave.” An honest mistake. But once you know that, you are an asshole if you insist on calling them Dan. When you know how someone wants to be identified… do it. You don’t get to decide how someone else identifies
I mean you’ll never hear something like “god, hitler was so evil, SHE doesn’t even deserve to be called a man,” because that sounds insane. But the moment some trans acquaintance or minor celebrity is a bit of shithead, some people will call them the wrong gender as part of their insult/punishment. Which also serves to reinforce the idea that trans people’s gender is only respected because people are humoring them or being courteous, and can be taken away for any reason. It’s the double standard
That rhetoric comes from a time when politicians who were anti-gay were outed by gay people to showcase how they were hypocrites who didn’t want their own legislation to apply to them. The pushback idea that developed at that time was that homophobic people were actually gay, and thus issues with gay rights and homophobia were actually only caused by gay people, and therefore gays were actually complaining about nothing and their oppression was their own fault. Just btw
Yes exactly! It feels so gross to have to intentionally misgender them, but I always check in with people who come out to me to see if 1) they are comfortable with me using their correct name and pronouns instead of deadname and wrong pronouns in front of others and 2) if there’s anybody who they aren’t comfortable with knowing yet
