if I were attracted to everyone, I’d call myself bi if I had a preference for a gender and pan if I didn’t care. but also my opinion doesn’t matter since language isnt prescriptive + I’m not bi or pan lol

I just say BI I don’t have a preference or anything. I just remember a trans people have gotten mad at me because I said Pan apparently pan is trans phobic? but for me BI and pan is just the same thing

The term “Bisexual” is older than Pansexual. It exists as an umbrella term under which identities like “pan,” “Omni,” etc. fall under. Basically, it all comes down to personal preference 🤷‍♀️ a lot of people prefer bi because it’s easier to explain to family. Some people prefer pan bc they like the colors better. Most people pick whatever they’re most comfortable with/resonate with more

Yeah I believe that’s what the difference is. But imo it’s such a nitpicky difference that it’s more confusion than it’s worth to have these two names for such similar things

But if we wanted one word for “attracted to more than one gender,” neither term would seem to really fit. “Bi” sounds like it means only 2 genders, and “pan” sounds like it means attraction to all genders (when maybe you’re only attracted to like, men and nb ppl or something).

pan isnt transphobic, if anything bi would be because the root means two (aka implying two genders) but also the definition for bisexual has progressed to not mean that (afaik)

It never meant that, it meant both sexes. Yes, it neglects to consider intersex individuals, but it stems from a time when intersex hadn’t been well studied and wasn’t widely known about. Bisexual was never meant to exclude anyone at all

#1 was right in their first comment though, neither one of them are transphobic in any way. Pan means attraction regardless of your genitals and bi means attraction to people with a variety of genitals but the attraction is affected by the genitals in some way

I guess, but sex is also a construct and some trans people (myself included) don’t see themselves as “either” sex (this isn’t a reference to intersex people). regardless, neither bisexual nor pansexual labels are transphobic lmao

Sex is absolutely not a construct. Sex as a term that the public uses refers exclusively to genitals. Biological sex is way more complex and there’s a wide spectrum, but it’s also not a construct.

I’m too tired to have this conversation today, but sex is definitely a construct lmao. if it wasn’t a construct, it’d be something solid and indelible. the fact you have a wildly different definition of sex from any other I’ve heard proves that point. ftr, most people consider sex based on hormone levels. even ASAB is based on something completely arbitrary (length of natal genitals iirc). you can’t fit bio sex into a neat little box, which is a big part of why it’s a construct

if you want to go into it more, here’s an article that puts it better than my YikYak comment 👍 https://growinguptransgender.com/2018/11/01/biological-sex-is-a-social-construct/

You’re misunderstanding the article. It’s saying that the ideal that biological sex is binary is a social construct. The way that society typically holds sex is a construct, yes, but biological sex absolutely is not a construct. Hormone levels are one of many things that scientists consider regarding sex, and I’d venture to say almost no one care about them on a societal level. No one’s getting their hormone levels checked for dating apps.

Not being able to fit sex into a little box is what makes it a human characteristic. Like I said before, it’s a wide spectrum. A comparison would be that every person who has adhd has a different experience and set of symptoms. Adhd does not fall into a neat, little box, but it’s absolutely not a construct.

ADHD symptoms aren’t a construct, but the diagnosis 100% is lmao. I don’t think you know what a social construct is 😭
