Also in all honestly I don’t have a really big problem with lesbians using the term gay in fact it’s cool ig but in my opinion gay should be more specific because gays and lesbians are treated very differently. Like I hate the saying “gay men & lesbians” or because it implies all gays are men and all lesbians are women. Or “gays” referring to gay men or gay men and lesbian women. It’s just exclusionary too often.

queer is an overarching term for the community as well as a specific label for those who don’t align with existing labels

Also queer has been watered down. It refers, we all know it was originally a slur that was radically reclaimed. It’s been watered down a bit where it’s more distanced from that and the radical connotation.

idk i follow a lot of queer media & i don’t see that happening. it’s still an empowering term for most of the community. if you want to go by another label that’s fine but i don’t think the entire community should have to

I didn’t make this post to dictate what label other people use nor do I specifically not want to use that label, I just want a word to describe people who may not be straight or cis but aren’t really radically queer. Like when I say queer I’m not including trans meds.

Also when I say it’s been watered down I’m referring to the fact that it’s been less focused on radicalism and more focused on aesthetic, a broad label, etc. I’ve certainly noticed people say queer when they really mean lgbt. Example (and this is not to dictate wording but to say people like this shouldn’t even be identifying as queer): people of color calling out the outright or purposeful racism among white “queer” people. Being racist and not even trying to unlearn that or fight against it inherently means you’re not queer because again it’s not radical the way that queer is supposed to be. I get that it’s empowering for a lot of people and I’m not saying being queer makes you perfect. But it has been watered down a bit just like goth. And I want a word to describe LGBT people who aren’t queer in action.
