Some straight people have been using Chappell Roan’s new song called the Subway but instead of just appreciating the song they’re changing the lyrics of the song to be straight. The video was of a straight girl saying “he got away” about her boyfriend. The person in the picture was in the comments saying that changing the lyrics wasn’t that deep so I tried to explain it to them and that was their response
Knowing this is about Subway I actually don’t get this. The song is so universal and powerful and doesn’t seem to make reference to any of these barriers, it seems fine to swap out the gender of the ex in the song (it doesn’t even mess with the cadence all that much). Could you help me understand: what would your reaction be to a guy/nonbinary person singing the song and swapping the gender of the narrator? What about a straight guy singing the song and keeping the gender the same?
