Is it wrong to call people that? Absolutely. But as someone who grew up in a rural area, you have to accept that there will be people who were never taught different terms. I said a LOT of stupid shit with good intentions when I first went to college. It’s important that we correct the person at a good time, but assuming they aren’t actually empathetic to marginalized communities just because of outdated terminology is stupid. The intention behind the word matters just as much as the word itself
This isn’t directly abt this post but the term “little people” is a bit funny not in the way you would think but bc I’m native and little people are a term we use for like mischievous fairies (gnomes? Idk) that pull pranks on people like stealing ur socks. So when I hear little people I think of that 😭 but obv I don’t say midget or anything just a funny side bit
How about doing something about the shit that actually affects marginalized communities. Transgenders are in the first stage of genocide in the US, we have a masked gestapo abducting brown people, and not to mention the techno-fascists wanting to turn the world into a totalitarian police state. I swear this is why I have no faith in my fellow lefties for accomplishing anything in this country other than finding ways to be more righteous than each other.
“Little people” is the generally accepted term, but there are people who prefer to be called “dwarves” or “person with dwarfism.” Of course there are also people who would be PISSED at being called a dwarf by a stranger. Ultimately I’ve been told to fall back on “little people” unless told otherwise.
Exactly. Does using correct, respectful terminology matter? Sure, absolutely. I’m a trans person who’s heard a lot of really bad terminology. I’ve also been the ignorant one. We can’t be excluding people over language when they’re actively choosing to be on the right side of history. Gently correcting someone’s language is not as important as tangible action
