I think some of it is because the civil rights movement genuinely succeeded in convincing many/most Americans that it's unfair to hate someone for how they're born, but homophobes really want to hate gay people, so they have to say it's a choice so they can justify their prejudices

Yeah that’s a good point I didn’t even think of that. I also think some people try to use kids saying they’re queer as proof that a gay/liberal agenda is being pushed in schools

oh definitely, they treat it like drug addiction almost. they feel “sorry” for their child, and “want to help them quit and get help”, and are horrified that people could possibly provide such nasty things to their kid in school. acceptance is an epidemic to them.
