well yes it still counts because you perceived them as girls and that was part of your attraction to them. but also middle school was a long time ago and it’s possible that you misunderstood your attraction or that it has changed since then. if you’re not actively attracted to women now, that’s more important than your dating history (think how many gay men/lesbians date the opposite gender before coming out—we wouldn’t say they must be attracted to that gender bc of their history)
