OMFG, OP here. I think many of you really missed the point. Slang coming from Black culture/AAVE isn’t really anything new (at least this century). But the slang coming from queer people/queer Black people *is* something new. “Boots the house down”, “slay”, “gagged”. Did these not originate in the queer community?
I just feel like it’s a slap in the face to say “It’s not queer slang, it’s Black slang”, when it’s actually both and it’s not mutually exclusive. Instead of praising queer culture, we’ve changed the subject to me supposedly not giving Black people any credit, and insinuating I’m racist or ignorant.
I agree that it’s not mutually exclusive. I’m just acknowledging that it’s not queer people generally who originate the slang you’re talking about, it’s Black queer people and queer POC. It’s important to explicitly/specifically acknowledge that due to how much culture theft/appropriation goes on. I’m not attacking you or insinuating anything about you personally; I don’t know you.
I mean it's an important distinction to make when black queer folks struggle to find acceptance and love in their own communities and families. The whole reason black queer subculture and chosen families even existed is because black queer people were put out onto the streets by their homophobic and transphobic families and communities. This is about more than just giving credit where it's due, it's about recognizing the struggle unique to black queer folks, and the culture that it birthed.
I know what intersectionality is, love. I’m a black woman, that’s intersectionality. But why are you trying to argue with me about this when you’re literally proving my point? They’re trying to erase the blackness by saying “b-b-but they’re queer too!!” Like no shit they’re black before they’re anything. Ask any BLACK queer person this….
It’s not “but they’re queer too!” nor is it erasing their blackness. The simple truth is that black queer people are not treated or perceived the same as black cishet people by society. It is at the intersection of BOTH of these identities they hold simultaneously that their unique oppression lies. They do not experience blackness the same, as they do not experience queerness the same as white queer folks. You are not one before the other when it comes to oppression and marginalization.
You literally emphasized the queer in your original comment so wdym it’s not “but they’re queer too.” And black queer people still deal with the racism and lack of credit that straight black people do….i really don’t understand why you’re trying to argue with me, a black person, about this when I’m telling you you’re trying to diminish the black involvement by reducing it to queer culture….
Shut up. My post was about sexual orientation, not race. Nothing wrong with giving credit to Black people; nothing wrong with giving credit to queer people either. These are not mutually exclusive communities. I identify with both communities, but my race isn’t always relevant to the discussion at hand, and vice versa. 🤷🏽♂️
