Mind you, the slavery continues- the 13th amendment did NOT abolish slavery. Slavery is prohibited "except as punishment for a crime." Also notice that the U.S. has the highest prison population of any country in the world. Also notice how that population is disproportionately black. Also notice how that population is disproportionately Igbtq and/or disabled. I can't stress it enough- fuck this country

We can love and support each other without embracing nationalism or patriotism. We can even become better at supporting LGBTQ and POC people around the globe if we reject patriotism. Borders only hurt us.

I think you're just describing the kind of patriotism OOP is describing. Not a love of borders or the past/current government, but the promise of the freedom of diversity, and fighting when we are denied that promise. Patriotism has absolutely been hijacked to be synonymous with government worship and nationalism. Fuck that.

I guess I'm confused where you're getting that from the OOP or the comments? I don't identify as patriotic but I can respect OOP's vision of it as rejecting government worship and nationalism and wanting better for the land and people that are at the mercy of our government.

Poor choice of words on my part. I should be saying the USA and USAmericans to be more accurate to that part. But to your point… American Indian tribes have always been separated by the US government. We live in an apartheid state, and it takes thirty seconds of looking at history to demonstrate that beyond doubt. The government schools were cultural genocide, and reservations are still underfunded and not treated with respect by the US government.

Be proud of your cultural identity, sure, that’s fine. Be proud of being an American Indian (of whatever tribe), be proud of being a, idk, midwesterner or New England-er or whatever. Thats not the US. Don’t be proud of a nation that is not proud of you, that actively rejects and suppresses you.

Patriotism = having pride in your country. White nationalism = a racist extremist ideology purporting that white people need to protect their identity and are being replaced, so they need to create an ethnostate. Refer back to my original comment. Patriotism to me is about our people, land, culture, etc. Not about our government. Seeing national parks and the great beauty of our land, for example, brings me a sense of patriotism, not white nationalism.
