It gives them very confusing erections that they don’t want to think about

They don’t live in reality, so they don’t see that

Some of them are, sure. But it’s still a really harmful joke. Most of them are just bigots looking to blame other people for their problems. You wouldn’t say a racist is secretly black or a misogynist is secretly a woman, so why say a homophobe is secretly gay?

Some of us do, but not in a sexual way lol. We just have jobs

you’re trying to compare 2 things that aren’t possible to something that’s entirely possible. sure many bigots are just that but there’s a level of bigotry that teeters into obsession & *that* is why people say that about homophobes sometimes.

Well that’s because those things aren’t comparable

It’s an illustration of the ridiculousness. There are black racists and women misogynists, but we don’t focus on them. But when it’s homophobes, suddenly it’s “they’re gay.” Like, sorry, I can’t help but find it homophobic that that’s the default joke here

what world do you live in that there isn’t focus on POC with internalized racism & women with internalized misogyny? especially now with the shift towards right-wing politics & “trad-wives”. the joke only exists bc of the amount of homophobes that have been revealed to be gay over time.

I wrote a rant but deleted it before posting. Here’s my calm response. Sorry if I got heated: this joke really gets under my skin. The joke doesn’t exist because so many homophobes have been gay. It exists because in the culture it was born in (sometime between 60s-80s America if I’m not mistaken), being gay was seen as a negative trait. It’s a way using “gay” as an insult—“don’t worry about what that hate preacher says, he’s just gay.”

phrases can also take on new meanings as time goes on. in today’s day & age, the speculation wouldn’t be there if there wasn’t compelling evidence that it’s true. you said earlier most homophobes are bigots looking to blame others, what do you do think someone gay with internalized homophobia does?

i get your frustration but in today’s context the joke has a tiny bit of truth to it too

“The speculation wouldn’t be there if there wasn’t compelling evidence that it’s true” That’s just wrong. Like, I’m sorry, but no. I’m not denying some homophobes have turned out to be gay, but speculation exists independent of evidence (for example, look at conspiracy theories such as Flat Earth, Gaylor, Pizzagate, the conspiracies around the JFK and Lincoln assassinations, etc)
