where am i saying they aren’t culpable? they stood there doing jack shit while fourth grade children were being murdered. there needs to be better mental health treatment access to stop people from wanting to shoot 9 year old kids and their teachers in the first place. cops need more extensive training and to hold to their sworn duty to protect. they had a job that day and they failed fucking miserably. clearly, otherwise 21 people would not be dead. two things can be true at once.
Legally speaking, cops have no sworn duty to protect, which is a large part of the fucking problem 🙃 Mental healthcare in the wake of a shooting is used a lot of the time to get people to stop talking about gun control, so be careful throwing it around. I believe you’re acting in good faith, and I don’t want to help them lie…
most cops take the oath to serve and protect. i know that is not legally binding, but god damn it that 100% includes stopping a maniac from brutally slaughtering 19 children with families who loved them dearly. not standing around listening to the gunshots, people pleading for their life, and the screams of pain and terror and still only giving a shit about yourself. they did have a duty that day. was it a legal duty? no, but it’s your job as a cop to eliminate a threat before more people die.
and i’ve made no reference to mental health and it’s role in gun control. i fail to understand how anything i said could be interpreted that way. we need mental health care to prevent people from getting so bad they have violent tendencies or may hurt others or themselves. we need to keep guns away from people with homicidal or suicidal thoughts. cops need additional training to actually do their job and protect people. all of that can be true at one time.
