like i can understand the “young kid gets hearing aids/glasses for the first time” videos being heartwarming, but the “adult person with mobility/hand issues finally has a perfume bottle they can use independently and easily” videos/articles are just like…that’s amazing, but why the fuck was every single perfume bottle before that designed in such an inaccessible way? it took us this long to figure out a wide flat spray top can help make the product accessible for more people? crazy
I feel like I know the exact product and maybe even the exact creator you’re talking about. The review I’m thinking of definitely wasn’t meant to be inspo porn at all. I could also go on about product design, especially vintage perfume, and how what we have now is technically more accessible than its forefathers but that’s a TANGENT AND A HALF that boils down to “when most things that old were invented people didn’t know about accessibility” (I’m a disabled disability scholar)
i am talking about the girl who reviewed the new rare beauty perfume, if that’s what you’re curious about. and no, her video is not inspo porn, and that’s the issue. people always take those types of vids as inspo porn as long as the video creator likes the product and mentions that it’s accessible for them. the comments are just always full of “this is so adorable” and shit like that and just, no it isn’t? it just feels weird and infantilizing as a disabled person
Ironically I feel like her comments are the least likely to be like that. She puts stuff like “no advice please” for a reason and it’s pretty effective. Maybe I just have a thicker skin for it because I have a service dog and people let little comments slip out all the time, but some things you just have to let go or you’ll be bitter and insane. There are some things that are truly infantilizing and maddening but I feel like those videos are typically a pretty safe place for disabled people.
you’re not understanding the issue i’m pointing out, and that’s okay. i’m trying to say that even if the creator and page itself is a safe space for disabled people, non-disabled people still treat those content creators like inspo porn or actual children. they make news articles talking about the video/creator and how “cute” it is that they have a product that works for them. they ignore “no advice please” because saying it’s cute isn’t advice. it’s infantilizing at best and dehumanizing at -
