first i would try and get a feel of what the members of your club want out of it. it’s easy to get carried away with big ideas for what you want but it’s important to dial it in and set reasonable goals that help your members feel they’re getting that they need. obviously dont let that hold you back from trying to do big things but start small
throughout the year we always plan and host a drag show, and i’ll also be doing an art show alongside that. I wanna make and release a zine with everyone involved in the club. I plan on doing a lot of local activism and generally helping provide resources for folks who show up. Seriously just a little lost on the day to day sessions outside of giving updates on those bigger projects
make sure to include people outside of your personal friend group! the gsa at my college has an exec board that is literally one friend group and they exclude new members that they don’t think “look queer” such as femmes and masc gay men. don’t force people to label themselves for the sake of being included
might be good to start with an icebreaker activity about what people are looking for in your club, then based on the responses prioritize certain activities or meetings. for example if people are looking for community events then introduce the idea of a drag show and plan meetings to get people involved
also if you want to do local activism please please please please talk to local orgs in your area, you’re gonna get a lot further, do better work, avoid stepping on toes, and build important connections if you do your actions in concert with other organizations in your area. it’ll also help get your members connected with other orgs that they might be interested in and grow community engagement
LOVE the zine idea. I don’t go to my college’s gsa/ prism, but I’m an exec member in our oSTEM chapter, and a lot of our more low-key meetings are just craft or game nights. We partner with our print club for button making, that’s a fun one! We also highlight a queer person in stem and their research every meeting, but you could totally replace that with talking about some section of queer history.
absolutely. there’s a few orgs out near me that i’m involved with that i can coordinate with. That first session i was planning to be an icebreaker and im glad to hear that’s a good idea. As for the drag show the GSA itself has been doing that for the last 10 years ish and is a requirement to plan as apart of the job. GSA coordinators plan that with the help of the club over the course of a semester and actually host it in March, tho i will bring it up to everyone and see if they wanna keep it
