I think the reason cruising is such a big part of the gay dude experience is because men aren’t instilled with the safety culture that women are taught about from a young age. Things like cover your drinks, cross the sidewalk, look behind you at night, carry some self protection etc. are drilled into young women while men/boys are encouraged to be completely ignorant about their surroundings with the expectation that if someone messes with them, they can fight it out.

I think there is also a lingering “key and lock” ideology. That men a value by being able to access many partners, women have value by being restricted to few or no partners.
