reminder to my future doctors (specially peds or urology): VCUG procedures are 100% unethical to perform on a child. a child’s brain processes that procedure in the same way as a violent sexual assault. it causes unnecessary fear and lifelong trauma.

there are way less invasive methods to test a child for reflux or bladder issues that do not involve holding them down on a table, forcefully catheterizing them, filling their bladder so full it hurts, and then making them pee themselves in front of a room of strangers. it’s violating, it’s humiliating, it’s painful, and it’s dangerous. study better tests and NEVER order this for a kid

bleh, it’s like adult doctors who were never sickly little kids themselves give almost zero thought to the effects of the actual physical violence they’re involving in the course of treatment. childhood medical trauma is so brutal to work through

i strongly recommend checking out the unsilenced movement on tiktok. you won’t find many sources acknowledging how painful and traumatic this procedure is, because it’s often done on women and kids and they’re just dramatic. kids grow up learning to not let people touch them there, let alone penetrate them, and now someone is forcing them to let that happen. that is assault.

pain programs are horrific. especially for kids. i went through one as a young teen because i had been suffering with chronic joint pain since i was eight. they did nothing to help me manage the pain, they just sat there the whole session telling me i’m dramatic and the pain is my fault. or that it would go away if i just had enough self control to ignore it. anyways i have a severe form of hEDS that was completely ignored for about a decade. most pain clinics are so neglectful

omfg, what are the chances we ran into each other on here??? i was actually diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis around age 7 by the exact guy who went on to popularize these programs. so i narrowly managed to avoid being submitted to one of those, but he did train my parents to push me to overexertion, not help me when i’m in pain etc

i am SO sorry you suffered through that heinous shit at the hands of people who were supposed to help you, and as a small child no less. i hope seeking treatment has been substantially less grueling & traumatic for you in recent years!! i’m big on disability justice as part of broader intersectionality so it was refreshing to see a post about this type of subject in here ❤️‍🩹🤝
