I stay in the south because I’ve met other queers who feared they were the only ones. Because there are sweet kids who know only goodness in people. Because every June the public libraries put up their pride displays and most people don’t bat an eye. Because there is shit that needs to change and if no one else will do it then I will.
To each their own. Once I was beat outside a bar just for the clothes I wore, I knew that place wasn’t for me and that I had to get out. Also, idk how much you’re going to change those areas. It’s been how long since slavery and they’re still openly racist. They’re incredibly slow to change.
Oh no yeah, being brown is a whole different story. People have called me greasy and all kinds of other names. Ive been kicked, shoved, spit on and told I don’t belong here. I’ve just accepted that there will forever be racism towards me on that end though. That’s a global issue that likely won’t get solved in our lifetime.
Not everyone can leave. For everyone who doesn’t have that choice and has to live in fear, I hope they see one person who can choose and has the ability to live out and openly and it brings them some comfort. I’m from the south and would frequently travel to a place that was much worse and meeting me was what gave my gf and my friend from there the courage to confront the possibility they may be queer and come out. My gf eventually moved, but my friend didn’t and that’s ok!
okay i also live in upstate NY and i get it. over 8million people live in NYC and about 20million people live in the entire state. that’s almost half of the population. other counties with high populations also vote blue, like ulster, duchess, and albany. but still, if you take almost half the population, a major city that votes primarily blue, yes there is a huge chance that NYS as a whole would be a red state
