etymology is a little fuzzy but the likely origin is from in early 20th century with bulldyke (a pejorative for a stubborn, headstrong woman—like a bull). when used as a slur it’s generally directed at butch-masc-androgynous lesbians, but speaking contemporarily, any lesbian can/will reclaim it
