Hi! I’m a heterosexual aromantic man. I’m also poly and a hard Dom into extreme BDSM. I call myself queer, but recently I’ve had a few people online tell me I’m not actually a part of the community. Am I allowed to call myself queer? Or should I not? TIA!

Aromantic falls under the lgbtqia umbrella

do you dude, nobody should be able to tell you if you’re queer or not 💀 but i am a little confused where the dom and bdsm part plays into sexual orientation

Thanks! These people were saying I’m straight because I’m heterosexual. I was trying to explain to them that I’ll have *sex* with women, I just won’t *date* them bcuz I’m aro XD

I had a friend once tell me about the overlap of being kinky and being queer… I thought it sounded just like me! Since then, I’ve had people discount my queerness because I’m not interested in anything vanilla 🤔 Can’t help liking what you like, amirite? ☺️

The communities overlapping doesn’t really make it evidence for your being queer, but I can see why you would relate them. Being aro falls under the queer umbrella but it also makes sense for people to be confused, especially in the places you’re looking for sexual interaction

Overlapping≠the same. For example, there is a lot of overlap between neurodivergency and queerness, but they are not the same, and being part of one does not mean you are part of the other. Kink is not inherently part of the LGBTQ+ community, even though a lot of us are into kink. However aromantic falls under queer, so on that page you’re correct.
