siloing here refers more to how social media’s used to do it, but basically we people who don’t talk to our neighbors are more inclined to talk to people/view online media that agrees with our views. unless we counterbalance this by seeing dissidents as Also People Who Have Somewhere They’re Coming From, we have a tendency towards extremism

happy to help! the siloing is a rather bad problem on a societal level. in the old days, someone supporting The Other Side may have been your neighbor just down the street who you’ve chatted with and maybe gone on a walk with. but these days… folks keep to themselves and their circles. also, in these conditions the loudest voices are the ones most heard, which makes others react defensively, ultimately forming a positive feedback loop as people see The Other Side as evil/stupid/harmful/etc
