the response to things like the afualo "drama" makes me oddly grateful to have grown up in a red area, bc it means im used to hearing somebody try to express the right idea w the "wrong" language. words are important but infighting is fed behavior

and before anybody tries to get technical, i was forced to be concise by the character limit, but by "infighting" i mean petty or bad faith arguments between ppl with like goals. if a racialized queer person critiques the white queer community, theyre not trying to cause infighting. my point is that theres a difference between tyler on the lacrosse team shouting slurs out of his truck window and my nana w/ memory issues not quite understanding pronouns

it’s just such a nonissue to me

The whole discourse imo is just divisive nitpicky stuff that no one genuinely cares that much about, and they would actually agree on more than they think if they actually listened to each other

IMO the original issue was like meh. I fucking hated how they worded the SA part but I could tell what she was trying to get at. However, in her apology she’s using trans women as a shield and the ones she did it to aren’t happy about it so now it’s like a whole other issue so who knows when this drama will go away

if you listen to the rest of the podcast, they actually explain what they meant in better terms. it was just taken out of context and thrown around like a hot potato. it is genuinely not that deep😭

agreed. the overall reaction is such a weird, bad faith interpretation of a established and agreed upon sentiment. just strange stuff

agreed. its a poor phrasing of an established/agreed upon idea, clipped w/out context from an old episode. its transphobes, ppl lashing out at their allies bc they feel unable to reach their oppressors, and former christians who never unpacked the "us vs them, moral purity, punish the sinner" thing. i dont think its a coincidence that afualo is being held to a much higher standard than many of her peers, given that shes a woc (and already a terf target for not matching white femininity)

i havent seen anything about the trans women she mentioned responding, but i found a clip of the apologies and like. "yall are only mad about this video bc a maga influencer deliberately misrepresented part of this old interview, i wont apologize for yall getting rage-baited by somebody else. i will be doubling down to troll idiots" and "talked to some trans women, they said theyre frustrated that im being used to hurt them. sorry to them." dont seem like using trans women as shields to me?

i dont have tiktok so i havent seen the comments myself, so maybe im missing context, but like. as a lesbian, if somebody was trying to say something nice about us (and complain about their experiences w/ the patriarchy) and got attacked for phrasing it poorly (bc usually afualo's audience knows who is talking and can be expected to take things in good faith!), i dont think i would be mad at them. its wouldnt be their fault that someone is running a smear campaign against them using homophobia

obv i cant speak for trans women and this is speculation on my part, bc im not them and i dont have the full context, but it just doesnt make sense to me. despite being cis, afualo has been the target of transphobia in the past due to the fact that she's tall, not on ozempic, and not white, which all make her "less feminine" to transphobes. why get mad at her bc she is being attacked by them? its not making more ppl say transphobic stuff, her critics were convinced bc of their transphobia

like, a trans person and a woman who has often been the victim of racism-fueled transphobia had a conversation about how trans women bring a refreshing perspective on womanhood compared to the anxiety it gives them and their frustration w/ how male centric it often feels (think the margaret atwood poem about always being viewed by a man), which is an established and long-discussed idea. a racist transphobe dug up that clip, took it out of context, and sent a bunch of terfs, maga stans, and

reactionaries after said woman and trans person. when the woman (who has a long history of dealing with trolls by matching their energy in the opposite direction) did what shes famous and loved for and refused to give trolls a win, trans women got upset with her for dragging them into it? i just dont understand why we're talking about her and not the transphobes targeting her, her guest, and trans ppl and bodily autonomy everywhere. just difficult to fathom

One of the trans women Drew claimed to talk to came out and was like Drew claimed to reached out to me and then tagged me in this post where she is claiming that I co-signed her apology. The woman is claiming that Drew never reached out to her and is trying to use trans women as a shield. For me this was the part that made me be like it’s crazy and has gone too far.

Like my problem is that Drew claimed to talk to these trans women and then didnt and personally I don’t agree with lying and trying to be like fuck you, you are wrong. It completely tanks her credibility and makes her actions not seem genuine

This! Exactly! That’s what I mean. Making it sound like you’re best friends with these people as a way to say “don’t be mad at me” and then TWO of them being upset about it and she’s not even addressing that. Also I feel like everyone is ignoring the SA comment and it’s gross

I feel like most ppl don’t even know how to address the SA comment bc it was just fucking crazy. Like the SA comment was misogynistic and transphobic
