i feel like there’s a fine line with it. the way catholicism is sexualized in mainstream stuff is weird but there are also a lot of people who grew up catholic and repressed sexually (both queer and straight) by their catholic upbringing and thus sometimes sexualize it as a response or even in a way to continue practice.
I’m Catholic, and apparently since my religion is “mainstream,” it’s okay, but it makes my blood boil. It makes me angry that people go on roaring rampages (however justifiably) about someone everyone believes is fictional being sexualized, but just because you think who I believe in is fictional, you can sexualize them and those who have followed them?
Well that is part of it, but I mean porn of nuns. In this case “trap nuns.” Which since the vows a nun takes are unique to them (nuns get one set and monks another, non-binaries are actually recognized and there’s a process for which, but the rules are pretty much the same), and are AFAB(ish) specific. So this would be mocking a vow made to God AND mocking the vow of celibacy.
I get that people who don’t understand why nuns are celibate might, but if I could make an analogy to new-age or historical mythology, Artemis (a goddess who was a virgin AND WOULD STAY ONE as she had made a pledge) being depicted as in the middle of an orgy, or Vesta doing the same, would be a mockery of what those goddesses were. This applies to nuns. Yeah; they might not always obey their vows, but that doesn’t declare open season on them.
I find it kidna annoying when super religious homophobic Catholics will complain about people dressing modestly as nuns or Joan of arc, but I do think it has something to do with both not taking things seriously, and also misogyny, that mainstream culture sees a woman who has specifically pledged herself to not be sexual, not be sexualised, and looks at her and goes, wow. I need to make a sexy costume of this idea.
I think a lot of this is that Protestantism doesn’t have any kind of celibacy requirement or consecrated Virgin concept. If it did, like, women in pink who were celibate but did the same thing, they’d be sexualized too. Those few Protestant monastic communities tend to just use Catholic garb anyway
To be clear, I’d be pissed about this too. I’m not saying that I’ve always been perfect, but there are lines that just should not be crossed. If you have a whole group of people sworn to be celibate, religiously, and they are mocked by being sexualized, I’d be mad too. Like depicting the Judensau makes me angry too.
Not really. One’s beliefs aren’t entirely voluntary. You cannot force yourself to change your mind. Believe me, I know, I’ve tried. Your beliefs CAN change, but that isn’t a voluntary decision, it happens over time organically. The difference is that sexuality doesn’t really develop so much as you realize it over time. The underlying issue is the same, that you can’t change willingly. I’m also still angry at people intentionally insulting and mocking people’s religions in front of them anyway
Also, sexualizing women who have gone out of their way to say that they are not going to be sexually active at all and have taken a vow not to be, like deliberately celebrating that they have made a vow that has historically been taken so seriously that nuns would commit suicide before breaking it, is just reflecting a supreme issue with boundaries in my opinion
i follow a trans creator/activist who got back into catholicism as an adult but is also a very active kink educator and activist so the relationship between her catholicism and sexuality are very much tied and it sometimes means sexualizing her own religion because that’s how she chooses to engage and practice.
Yeah, that was what I’m getting at. It’s not about “oh religion bad we get to sexualise it bc it bad.” Because why aren’t there sexy pastors. It’s always nuns and preists. I think the nun thing is because men see a woman who is unattainable and desires to break her boundaries. Same with lesbians in a way.
