Reinforcing the notion that transition will make people ugly, and implying that it’s okay to make fun of someone for transitioning, keeps a LOT of people in the closet. If the "asshole" OOP is talking about were a trans woman, and they were talking about how the person has small boobs is a form of passive revenge, would that not be transphobic?
Hmm, in that scenario if they were implying she would never be a woman in virtue of her small boobs, then I’d say that was at least implicitly transphobic (as transwomen are likely to have smaller boobs on mass than cis women). I don’t think making fun of a (trans)guy for having a receding hairline is transphobic though cause cis guys get shit for that all the time too. Body shaming? Sure. Sexist? Maybe. Transphobic? Not unless you define transphobic as “being mean to a trans person”
Bestie, cis women also get made fun of for having small boobs. It is literally making fun of someone For Their Transition. I genuinely cannot believe that you would say it is only transphobic if the target was a trans woman. The exact same scenario, only the gender of the trans person is different. Really? Do I need to explain why that's fucked?
Well, that’s why I said it would be *implicitly* transphobic, as in it would imply that trans women are less woman *by implication*. I guess I should ask, what do you mean by transphobic? Because it seems like we may be talking past each other. I would say a thing is transphobic if it treats a person as lesser (either in terms of their gender identity or as a person) in virtue of them being trans. Are you using the same definition?
Yes. Based on your definition, it is transphobic to discourage people from transitioning (because that's trans-specific targeting & implying their decisions abt their body are wrong/bad), by, say, making fun of traits they gain through transition. Which is what OOP was doing. They directly connected their hairline to being trans.
Ahh I get it now. See I think the reason they brought up the person being trans, even though it didn’t matter, is because this is on the LGBT+ Yik Yak, so they were expressing why the post is relevant to the LGBT+ Yik Yak (i.e. that it’s talking about an LGBT+ person). If it were in some other context, I would be much more likely to clock it as specifically transphobic, or at least to question why the OP mentioned them being trans (as it really wouldn’t be relevant to anything).
