jk rowling is leading a crusade against a trans woman for asking a 14 year old and her mother if they needed help at the store. tell me again why it’s okay to give this woman your money by buying harry potter books/movies/merch?

but this isn't about the question being asked tho, if she weren't trans, no complaint would have been filed. this is typical shit employees are expected to do, but bc she's a trans woman, she's being treated like a predator. it's literally just prejudice and that's not arguable

As a kid, I felt uncomfortable ordering for myself or asking for assistance or being asked if I needed help by anyone. That does NOT mean that the employees were doing anything wrong. The store apologized that the customer was uncomfortable but didn’t say there was anything wrong with what happened, that’s typical customer service is just apologizing even when the customer is totally bullshiting things.

upvote 21 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #7 6w

she's allowed to feel uncomfortable, and decline help from anybody. they did politely decline and that should've been the end of it. but that's no excuse for the mom to lodge a nasty complaint and for jkr to lambast this poor employee for daring to be both trans and employed.

upvote 10 downvote
⚒️
Anonymous replying to -> #7 6w

Asking a child if they need help, especially if they are alone in a store, is a normal thing for an employee to do. This is genuinely like someone complaining that a black employee asked their kid if they needed help and the kid felt uncomfortable because they were black.

upvote 16 downvote
default user profile icon

also your prejudice can inform your reactions even if you aren't actively thinking about it. like c'mon now you know this

upvote 9 downvote

Anonymous replying to -> #8 6w

so you’re blaming the victim of an uncomfortable situation because you don’t agree with her being uncomfortable? in general I’d never go up to a child and talk about bra sizes and things like that like that’s just weird and uncomfy

upvote -10 downvote
⚒️
Anonymous replying to -> #7 6w

Dude feeling uncomfortable is not inherently bad. Is that what the employee asked? Asked the little girl about her bra size? Or was it just asking her if she needed help?

upvote 8 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous replying to -> #7 6w

but cis employees in fact commonly do just that, and it's only considered an issue when a trans person does it. what is so scary about trans people?

upvote 11 downvote
⚒️
Anonymous replying to -> #7 6w

The kid is the victim of an employee doing their job? That’s like going to the doctor and saying you’re a victim because your doctor asked if you had any breast pain or growth. Like is it uncomfortable? Yes. Is it also part of going there and finding what you came for? Also yes.

upvote 16 downvote
default user profile icon
Anonymous 6w

but this was a child and there’s certain ways to approach and speak about things with children so i think going forward this will teach the store to be more aware of these sorts of things and maybe not ask the customers questions like that unless they ask for it first

and I believe they were not the correct employee that typically helps with the bra fittings especially on children, it’s not a crime but it’s just not a good look to make a child feel uncomfortable and just a learning opportunity for the store i think

I’m ngl, I started developing at age 6, by 12 I had DD’s, so when I went to the store I was too scared to ask the worker, he was a male that identified as male, came up to me and asked and I said I do not know how to pick out a bra, is there someone else I can get to help. Boom an older lady came and showed me how the measurements are done so I could get a bra that accurately fit. I didn’t even have to take off any of my clothing to do the measurements.

upvote 9 downvote
⚒️

I’m not seeing that the employee ever asked the girl about a bra fitting, just that she asked in the girl needed help and the girl had gone in there WANTING to get a bra fitting, not that the employee said anything about it.

Idk if you’ve ever been in stores like Walmart, but employees from other departments come and help people in different departments from their own. It’s common for a lot of retail stores

upvote -6 downvote
default user profile icon

usually in every store I’ve gone to i will personally ask for help and I’ve worked in retail so I’d never approach a child unless they consented for me to, i think that’s just common sense but maybe customs are different

my point is it’s transphobic to make this a story. it is a problem to the media and to jkr because they are transphobic. this would not be news if it was a cis woman.

I get that it can be uncomfortable for anyone in general to ask someone if they need help with bras. It is not as big of a deal that they are making it to be. The worker was simply asking if she needed help, typically they ask people who look lost and confused (majority of the time), some ask anyone they come across with if they need help with anything. A simple “no thank you” would’ve been fine. Or a request for a different employee.

Now the issue is faced with what if someone who was like me goes in and doesn’t know what they’re doing and waiting for someone to ask. Are they supposed to stand there for another 30 mins clueless? I loved that someone came up to me to ask if I needed help, even though he was a male that identified as male, I said that I didn’t know what I was doing and could I get someone else. They were able to flag someone on the walkie-talkie to come and help me bc the lady was no where near the department
