I never understand the point of this argument. For one, multiple things can be pressing issues at once, it’s not like we have a limited supply of our ability to care about things. For another, ability to hide is only one element that affects the lives of the people involved and only really matters if hiding was somehow better for us. The majority of both POC and queer people do not want to hide and appear as white cishet people, whether they are physically able to or not.
I’m absolutely not trying to argue but may I ask what about trans folk who don’t pass? I’m not talking about being visibly queer, but about when trans women don’t pass and the world becomes so much more hostile. Like I agree with the point you’re making but at the same time some of us can’t just “hide our queerness”
Well, first of all, the ‘underlying problem’ doesn’t change the point being made, secondly, what exactly is the underlying problem? And thirdly, the people who are close to you figuring out you’re queer isn’t really the type of situation OP is talking about. They mean something that is obvious when you walk into a room of strangers, there’s literally no way to hide your skin color from them, but it’s easy enough to hide your queerness from them if you just try.
that’s fair but I don’t think it’s particularly useful to focus on every type of discrimination at once. Like there’s way to accomplish anything that way. That’s why more pressing issues should be addressed first…like racism. And it’s worth noting that nothing exists in a vacuum, so addressing and advocating against one type of discrimination will inevitably benefit other groups of people as well.
