Fat person speaking here. I don’t think it’s a slur. But it IS pejorative and derogative. It’s in the same category as words like stupid and ugly. Are they slurs? Technically no. But we’re socialized from a young age to view them as negative descriptors. I understand that fat is also a medical term. But to that point, so is the r slur. Words change meaning over time. The power a word has over you is what you give it.

Exactly! It’s a physical descriptor. Someone’s own feelings/perceived connotations of an otherwise innocuous word don’t make it a slur. Can people throw the word “fat” around derogatorily? Yeah, but that’s more of a social issue, the word “fat” itself isn’t inherently offensive.

Not a slur by any means ofc. But to glorify it? I find that a little off putting

If someone called me fat, I’d use that as a positive reinforcement to get up and lose weight. Why do people just cry about everything now days? That’s why I refuse to have friends under the age of 30 now days because they were born with hurt feelings and everything offends them. Grow up and worry about real life problems.

I think i wouldn’t compare it to the r slur because fat is also a Thing. like, fats are in food, fat is on your body, etc. I would compare obese MORE to the r slur than fat to the r slur, bc obese is used more negative in the way r slur is but fat can be entirely neutral imo! (-also fat person)

Not exactly. Just wasn’t raised to be a baby and cry about everything. If you think turning something negative into something positive is old man crying, then you must be part of that group.

I’ve had plenty of “real life problems” since I was born. Absolutely insane to say an entire generation is too easily offended rather than consider perhaps you are wrong.

fat person speaking here. deciding to not view it as negative and push for it to just be the descriptor that it’s designed to be is actually cool. i’m a fat fat fatty and jumping around saying it is pitiful and more insulting

tbf, they were only comparing the fact that both the R slur and fat are used as medical descriptors. they didn’t say the R slur was on the same level. also, fat as a noun (for fats and fat on your body) is easily differentiable from fat as a descriptor.
