I don't agree with this tbh, I get what you're saying but it's really easy not to be racist. and the actions of these people, even if they were teenagers, still deeply effected others. so what if they weren't fully developed neither were many of the people they hurt. I'm not saying there aren't worse people out there but I'm not going to monetarily support them if I can help it
yeah, I’m mostly thinking about really extreme cases like teens who SA-ed someone or generally hurt someone else really bad. Also, teenagers should be held accountable for their actions after they do them, even if there’s some grace given to them for their age, they just may not fully comprehend why it was wrong or why they did it until they’re older and that’s why I care more about their actions as an adult.
I grew up in a rural town where most teenagers basically spew whatever hate their parents and peers taught them. I think teens are so easily influenced and just want to be accepted by others. Sometimes they get mixed with the wrong crowd and say or do some things they know are wrong but do them anyway because they want the approval of others. I just can’t not give them some grace because I remember what it was like.
I understand that, but I think it's important that these people acknowledge those previous actions and apologize. and very often with these celebrities they bury these actions or brush them off. and I don't think anyone, especially POC, are required to forgive someone even if they apologize for previous racist actions. so yes teenagers can easily by led astray, but also the people victimized by their actions are allowed to hold those actions against them.
yes I agree 100% with everything you just said. When I said in a previous reply ‘I care more about their actions as an adult’ I mean that they acknowledge what they did, show regret, apologize, don’t demand forgiveness, etc. on top of just being a better person. But, I think we’re getting into parasocial behavior a little bit. Victims don’t have to forgive their actions, but random people on the internet are not usually the victims of these celebrities.
okay yeah I totally agree with all of that then!! for clarification by victims I both meant like people they directly said terrible things to, but I also think if someone posts something racist or homophobic online then the people that post targets are victims of it. so that's what I meant when I said people can hold it against them, I was meaning any specific groups targeted
