I think media portrayal of bdsm has done a lot of damage as well like movies, books, porn, etc.; it is often either accompanied by a storyline featuring actual abuse or it lacks extremely valuable context to show the consent side of it. Since that stuff is often the first/only depiction of bdsm that ppl see, that’s what their conceptualization becomes and it’s difficult to deconstruct.
Similar to #1 I do think there are a lot of things in media portrayal of bdsm that is more severe than what people typically do for bdsm. At the same time though there are those that take it too far, but sure, to each their own as long as consent is given. However, I personally knew a couple who would (with consent) go as far as to cut and draw blood from each other for some ritualistic thing. To each their own sure, but I’m not gonna pretend like that’s ok or normal.
Yeah and then ppl get the idea in their heads that most relationships involving bdsm are like that when that’s an extreme minority of ppl who do all that. Also is it even still BDSM atp? Like I could maybe understand drawing blood as a byproduct of pain inflicting methods, but if you draw blood just for the explicit purpose of drawing blood is that BDSM or are you just doing some freaky occult shit and calling it a kink
