YouTube is now going to require ID verification to use YouTube. If their AI thinks you are under 18 you will have to show your ID to freely use YouTube. Spotify is considering the same. Goodbye free speech. Hello mass surveillance.

I’m confused isn’t it a good thing that kids aren’t exposed to 18+ content?

No, for real. People need to think outside of themselves. If you are over 18 I’m sure your ID will pass. There is so much stuff kids are exposed to these days it’s sad

That’s not for the government to decide. The USA did not sign the Universal rights of the Child because Americans wanted parental rights. Now parents need to do their job. Not to mention the ID/face scan will be done on adults not just children. Meaning the privacy of adults will be infringed upon. Additionally there is already YouTube Kids- children can go there. Also it’s YouTube it’s already heavily monitored. There is no excuse for censorship and mass surveillance.

If you don’t like youtube or spotify then don’t use them, it’s a PRIVATE company which means they can do whatever they want within reason. Just like if you were to go into sam’s club, they check your bags to make sure you’re not stealing things because you accepted their TOS. Don’t like it? use a different company.

Except in this case the US gov is requiring you to give over all your personal information to private entities in order to enter the library out of the fear a toddler might find an 18+ book in there

It’s not about the ID passing. I don’t want my government ID and real life identity tied to any online account.

L take. Maybe enforce the anti trust/monopoly laws and I’ll see your point.

In theory yes, but in practice it requires adults to link their government identity with their online accounts. Which most people don’t want to do. A better solution would be parents monitoring their own kids.

It’s an invasion of privacy and there is a threat of constant data theft and leaks.

Additionally YouTube doesnt have x rated content. Why can’t parents just do their job.

it costs money to get an ID, not everyone has an extra $50+ for an ID if they’re barely affording food

You kinda need an ID to do a lot of things nowadays? Granted that you don’t have a driver’s license, you’re still going to need an ID to get a job and a house among other things

I want to point out that we are on an LGBTQ+ sub and specifically trans people will face a lot of extra problems with both ID verification and facial recognition technologies (other groups as well - face ID is known to be worse on anyone who isnt white, for example). This is not to protect children. This is to begin to allow mass government surveillance and censorship, with the goal of connecting all online activity to a real name and face. This does not help children.

I’m a trans guy and my face reads as wayyyy younger than I am. Like I’m 18 but facial recognition technology often reads me as twelve.

so herein lies the issue: kids shouldn’t be exposed to adult content, but it is not the responsibility of the government to decide what you are and are not allowed to access, especially if you can only access it by providing your personal information or biometric data. it is the parents job to protect their child in online spaces. it is their job to monitor the content they access. it’s their job to keep them away from adult content. we’re being surveilled because parents are lazy.
