Friends I’m going to hold your hand when I say this. Just being lgbtq does not make you politically queer or infallible. it is necessary to engage with queer history and thought or you risk failing to see queerphobia or racism or misogyny for what it is

and not everyone can or is expected to be a scholar in this stuff but you’ve gotta put in an effort. hell I can suggest places to get started. the thing you can’t do is put your head in the sand about it (esp talking to folks like me: white and male presenting)

Those sources are fairly academic but they’re easier to read than Butler. Summaries are also useful!

"Before Stonewall" is an excellent documentary to watch. Paris is Burning also doesn't hurt to watch but it's notable to keep in mind that it was made outside of the queer community for the purpose of sensationalizing and exploiting us even though it is still grounded in reality.

I also heavily encourage you to look into the history of queerness (which I unfortunately do not have as many immediate recs for) particularly the way that gender and race are intertwined and how kink is linked to queerness
