I know this is going to be controversial, but just sharing my thoughts here. I think the reason harry potter is so successful has much more to do with the films and the franchises built around the books more than the book itself. Naturally as someone who works in theatre I think to Cursed Child. I think about the hundreds of people who helped put it on. I think about everyone behind the scenes of the movies that made the magic real. such a tiny fraction is actually going to JK.

Though i understand not spending money on any official media or merch, I don’t think simply engaging in fan made content does the harm that this post implies. You can buy the books and movies 2nd hand. There’s ways that you can still engage in the fandom without sending JK money.

It’s still harmful in exactly the way this post describes - creating excitement for the original work. She takes credit in minds of most, even for the movies (though I agree she shouldn’t), and definitely still gets paid millions.
