i was thinking about interning with a trans youth space. but they aren't run by a trans person, don't seem to provide any resources, and don't have like a peer living room or a direction to take the group in. now i'm not too sure. it could end in [1]

one of two ways. i'm asked to do everything and given carte blanche to run meetings, the space, and events. or 2 i just sit there on my phone for 240 hours a semester. this position is unpaid and an hour a way, but could be a really cool way to connect with the community and get internship hours [2]

Do you want to run meetings and the space?

I'm also interviewing for a paid position closer to home working with my local center. so like should i take a chance and go for it? or wait and see my options? i kind of think that the lack of any concrete plan for getting the place up off the ground was a bit of a red flag [3]

Is the local place a queer/trans Center?

i wouldnt be averse, but it's also an hour away and if i'm doing everything for the place then i'd like to at least have gas comped. also its a big if as to whether i actually get to do anything.

it's at my college's lgbt center. so i already have been there know the situation and know i'll have a role there where i actually do something if i get it.

Yeah, thatโ€™s definitely a big leap not knowing the outcome. Iโ€™d say it may be good if you need the hours and couldnโ€™t earn them from the paid position, but if you can get them from the paid position Iโ€™d do that. I volunteer at a queer youth Center thatโ€™s run very well and itโ€™s still a LOT even though Iโ€™m only working the boutique. If you need the hours and can only get them there, Iโ€™d do that, but make sure the person in charge knows you want to help. Because I find that most of the time that

People end up on there phones for hours is because theyโ€™re not being given work, and sometimes the person in charge needs a push to know you WANT to work vs studying or being online. Many college work positions are supposed to be easy, and let you study at work sometimes, so they may have that preconceived idea of college vouleteers

yeah i'm probably going to check out one of the events that they do have so that i can talk with the operator and just see what's up with the place and if we can solidify a more specific role. but if i get the paid position then i think i might go with that instead. it seems like the youth center is a gambleโ€”which i'm not adverse to. it's just i'd want to be more sure on what i'd be doing

also i would definitely prioritize the paid position, it sounds like a better fit, but if you donโ€™t get it the unpaid position would still get you swimming in the right direction

I think you have a choice to make between two very good opportunities, one that is volatile but could be a good opportunity to make a big change, and another that is going to be comfortable and better structured. I think you need to weigh the options, but also think about wether youโ€™ll be able to truly do as much as you want at the youth Center as a college student, or wether thatโ€™s something to take on when you only have a job, not schoolwork AND a job, or if thereโ€™s other ways to help out.

no worries just thought iโ€™d mention it since i cant see her comments (only person i have blocked rn) and ik that you got recently banned after getting into it with her. didnโ€™t want you to be accidentally interacting with her if that wasnโ€™t something you were comfortable with.

I also definitely agree that you should go with the paid position if you get it. Youโ€™ll always be able to do more if your making money to sustain yourself

this would essentially serve as schoolwork. I'm getting my masters in social workโ€”which is split between a couple days of class work and a couple days of site work! the money would definitely be a bonus though, as i need the income as a full time grad student! tysm ๐Ÿซถ

ty for the heads up! if we get into it again i'll just end up arguing with her again and get banned again. i have low tolerance for that bs and am not afraid to call it out when i see it.
