A great example would be when someone suggested transphobia should be made illegal. They were not happy when I told them that criminalizing thoughts is inherently fascist and a fundamental violation of the first amendment. Or when everyone was all ‘no cops at pride!’ and fully asserted that they would be more comfortable with everyone at pride fully strapped. (Not even thinking about the fact that a shooter could just walk in and no one would notice them).
Or when someone posted a few weeks about whether Trump voters deserve rights. Again, a crazy thought. But thinking they don’t makes you no better than them. I could keep going. But seriously. People post the most insane takes here. And then everyone nods in agreement. And when anyone calls them out, it’s all name calling and performative virtue signaling. If you can’t tell, a majority of people in this community are cis white people, speaking about topics they know nothing about.
nah i completely agree with that thank you for elaborating. i feel like the general population on this page is mostly college age queers who don’t really interact with the greater queer community in their area. a lot of “issues” brought up here simply just do not hold the same weight in real life, meanwhile actual life experiences are often discredited and belittled.
you’re free to believe that’s what they meant, but again, if that’s the case then why are they talking about criminalizing “thoughts” rather than speech… why would they not specify that the other person wanted to make transphobic *speech* illegal. as-is, what they said boils transphobia down to just being an issue of thought crime. which is disingenuous right-wing rhetoric
I’m referring to a specific post where someone wanted to make transphobia illegal. I asked them how they wanted to criminalize someone’s thoughts, without violating the first amendment. Because criminalizing thoughts is a fascist idea. I got downvoted into oblivion and everyone acted like I was crazy. Because yes, discrimination is illegal and should be. But you can’t criminalize someone’s thoughts and beliefs. Like?
