tbh i could never understand why people were so supportive of the military around wartime. y’all are proud of people dying in wars where we didn’t need to get involved in? i’m not saying there isn’t bravery to sacrificing your life, but there is no reason people need to die for this.
it was a broad statement to address anyone, but i really do believe that war as a whole is a completely avoidable issue. not to mention that the whole connotation of “fighting for our freedom” is so out of date because the country is purposely putting itself under attack. no one is trying to take away our freedom if we don’t stick our nose in places it shouldn’t be.
And I understand your metaphor about how even if you aren’t killing people yourself you’re contributing to the military industrial complex, but the military does do a LOT of different things and while this definitely doesn’t absolve them, I think it’s worth acknowledging in this discussion they also do a lot of good. More before USAID died, but I digress.
nope. I live in poverty and am stuck surviving off of the food bank. my degree is useless because I am too physically disabled to hold a job. I was denied state benefits despite extensive documentation of my illnesses. do not fucking play the “you just can’t imagine what desperation is like” card here
idk about you but contributing to an active problem would feel morally wrong for me. yes, the military does a lot of different things, but the intention behind its creation is to provoke fear and violence. it’s unfortunate that the job market is shit, but we shouldn’t be encouraging people to be a part of that. the military capitalizes on people who don’t have a direction because they’re the easiest to manipulate. that’s not a good thing.
you really saw my post and said “I’m not logically inconsistent, I’m consistently in favor of murderous colonization as long as the victims are brown people in the Middle East!” we get it, you’re even worse than the people I was expressing frustration with. I have no interest in trying to reason with someone whose worldview is based in racist propaganda
I think it dates back to Vietnam War where lots of people who fought in the war faced backlash and disrespectful behavior because the war was deeply unpopular. Then it led to this idea of “support our troops “ and separating that support from supporting the war. The idea is that they are following orders and the blame belongs to the government for approving these wars in the first place. That’s why. Of course, as we know from the holocaust that following orders is not a get out of jail free card
