I’m a bisexual man but i don’t have many gay friends and from the few I do have, I’ve been told I’m “not very culturally queer.” What is some media I can consume or something I can do to be more culturally queer? I feel like an outsider

Ok first off that so so dumb. It sounds to me like they’re trying to say that you’re “not queer enough”, which is just rude and not a real thing. Second, if I happen to be misreading the situation, reading up on queer history might be what you want to do.

You don’t have to be “culturally queer” if it’s not something that really calls to you, that’s completely chill! But if you wanted to lean into it more, Rocky Horror Picture Show is a fun start. It’s a nonsensical movie, but it’s dramatic and fun and appreciated in the community

i would figure pretty much every type of queer person can benefit from watching the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning, which is about the late-80s gay & trans NYC ballroom dance subculture. whether or not you end up relating to anyone in it, it’s a really important bittersweet window into the past. connected some dots for me re: US gay history

Underlined the B in LGBTQ A+ and just kind of leave it there for them.. seems pretty screwed up and try to exclude

i can maybe come up with some more personalized recommendations too if you wanna give me an idea of what types of art & media you like the most + being in touch with queer art & history is great but also i agree with #1 that it sounds like your friends were passing some type of weird petty biphobic judgment on you 😭

More relevant media that people reference is also Drag Race. If you’re wanting to get into history, there’s queer history in all areas of life! You can go all the way back to greek mythology, to the prohibition era, the AIDS crisis, etc

Personally I would not want to associate with the kind of gay people who watch drag race. Not a good history there of being accepting of everyone. Small drag shows are awesome tho
