yup… even with specific chronic illnesses which you would logically associate with “losing x amount of pounds will definitely improve your health”, it’s just not that simple. there’s too many different factors involved. source: been 1) chronically ill and 2) fat pretty much my whole life. i weigh less now than at any other point in my adulthood. meanwhile, my autoimmune illness & diabetes are both escalating more aggressively than ever before
when i was a little kid, i was constantly expected to overexert myself physically so i’d lose weight and my JRA would get better. “the excess weight is too much pressure on your joints” as an adult, a rheumatologist confirmed that my bone misalignment issues were exacerbated in the longterm by the “pressure on my joints” of consistently walking too much (for someone with my condition) in pursuit of weight loss. ironic
i think it happened over 7-8 months, and the worst part is that absolutely none of it was intentional. i just started shedding weight and next thing i knew i was looking scary thin. i had 3 appointments with my doctor over that period and not ONCE did she mention the weight loss. it’s almost like…my weight didn’t matter unless she could make a comment about it being over that invisible “acceptable” line…
your story rings with me a lot! i had a very similar experience as a teenager. i was overweight for a lot of my teen years and early 20s, and that period was FILLED with comments about how if i just lost weight, i wouldn’t be having issues with pain, my period, nausea, etc and that my diet and lifestyle were the main contributors. they stuck me in PT for 4 years because they believed my legs weren’t strong enough to support my weight, and that’s why i was having knee pain. i finally got a -
- consult with an orthopedic surgeon after those 4 years, who did an MRI, took one look at it, and said that it was a structural issue that could only be fixed by surgery. and that the years of PT i had been doing had in fact made it WORSE because they weren’t doing exercises that support my actual range of motion and needs. my kneecap was dislocating, and i was treated like i was just too fat to stand up.
