As someone who isn’t a member of this community, genuine question: Why don’t you guys celebrate pride with the same intensity AFTER pride month is done? Ya know, to show corporations and the gov. That you’re going to celebrate yourself more than a month.

We do! At least many of us do, it’s just that once pride month is over it’s the companies that stop celebrating / showcasing, especially the media, and so it’s not as visible to those outside the group

Idk, probably for similar reasons to why people don’t keep celebrating Christmas into January, February, etc. Having big events during a certain time of year makes them more special and helps concentrate planning efforts

I just went to a pride festival 4 days ago. There are pride celebrations happening, but the media and others don’t report on any of them Plus, this doesn’t take into account other forms of celebrating pride that aren’t big parades or festivals. People celebrate gay pride in gay clubs for example

But some people do wear rainbows and pins and such year-round, which is cool

I mean, they obviously don’t care about you and want you celebrate who you are in a limited time period (to profit off of and control you), so like… just keep doing it to fuck with them? Idk maybe I’m just dumb lmao.

My city barely had any pride events during the summer, and the ones I wanted to go to kept getting postponed and canceled 😔

Oooohhh ok that makes a lot more sense. I always got the impression that pride stuff just kinda died down after pride month, which was always odd to me. I guess I’m also curious of your opinion of pride month’s purpose in the first place then. I’m a little torn on it because, while visibility is crucial, I also think that your community is facing corporate exploitation during this time (especially with the media). Does that make sense?

True, but I feel like there’s a difference between that and actually holding events related to pride.

So basically, you don’t stop celebrating yourself, it’s just that it’s less visible to those that aren’t in the community? That makes a lot more sense. I guess it’s just unfortunate how one of the points of pride is “being seen,” and yet it’s kinda at the mercy of the media.

I personally keep it going, but some do tone it down. Hard to celebrate Christmas in March like someone else pointed out. But pride has existed before corporate recognition. We’ve been fighting the long fight like this for decades, it’s only in the last ~10 years that companies started giving two fucks about us. We know they don’t care about us, most of us don’t care about them in return, we know what their real motivations are when they “promote pride”

Bingo. Like this most recent festival I attended had probably somewhere in the ballpark of 300-400 people in attendance over the course of the two nights it took place. Never saw anything about it even on local news
