depends if it’s actually relevant/an extended sales relationship. if a random cashier asked my pronouns it’d be weird and it comes off as like. well meaning discrimination. it’s a “hello, i noticed you’re trans and now i’m going to treat you differently.” if you’re not also asking sixty year old grandmas, don’t ask me.

I don't think it's rude but if you want to be more subtle and general you could go with "what should I call you?" or "how do you like to be hyped up?"
