Hey to the person who downvoted this: What would you call the experience I had when my Mom prayed over me asking God not to make me gay?
Sometimes I wonder how many guys are actually bi but just hide that part of themselves to be socially accepted. I know most discussions on comphet are about lesbians but I think men can face a similar pressure that should also have a name!

some people use heteronormativity, but in this particular context compulsory heterosexuality also seems appropriate. comphet is often used to describe lesbian experiences, that’s true, but if you read the original essay that coined it rich describes all women as experiencing comphet which necessarily excludes lesbians. other scholars working with the concept have used it/studied men and particularly queer men.

I’m not saying it’s comphet but it’s definitely something and needs a name to identify it. I feel like there’s hermeneutical injustice here

this idea that it’s a lesbian exclusive term is 100% an online phenomenon.

Sorry, I should have said women instead of lesbians. That was definitely my bad.

it’s still not exclusive to women either, that’s just the framework it originated in because adrienne rich was a lesbian feminist. my point is that you can absolutely use it to describe your experience and subsequent feminist/queer scholars have used the term when studying or writing about men, including queer men.
